Poem From 'Against Nature', by Huysman
Utterly exasperated,
the workers shod
the tinny hexameters,
weighing and measuring
the statutory allotment of words
according to the unalterable laws
of pedantic prosody.
They abhorred the structured
and starchy lines,
with their formal attire
and abject subservience
to the rule of Grammar.
Seeking chaos, but forced to succumb,
each line eventually
was mechanically bisected
by the ruthless, yet
inevitable caesura, and
finished off with
the cold invariable shock
of a dactyl striking
spondee.
